Home for the Holidaze
It was Stolen Cables Home for the Holidaze house show. Illuminated by bright Christmas lights, I stood there and just stared at the house. When I finally got the courage, I walked around through the side gate, back yard, and to David’s back door. David is the bassist for Stolen Cable, he was hosting the party.
I opened the door and was greeted by loud drums and guitar. David saw me and walked over. He introduced me to everyone in the band.
Jarred is the drummer, Dante is the guitarist, and Josh is the lead singer. Surrounded by men in their late 20’s and early 30’s I was out of place at first. However, everyone in the band was super kind and welcomed me with open arms.
Nick Campbell, a big part of the comedy scene, and David’s good friend came in with his wife. He immediately grabbed the mic and did part of his stand-up set. Laughter spread amongst the band.
Tonight I will be a wallflower. I will quietly be observing the events that transpire around me. Soon more people started to trickle in. The band spread out greeting people left and right.
The small home was getting crowded, so I moved outside to enjoy the cool nighttime air. Looking up at the sky you could see the stars, or maybe it was the Christmas lights. Whatever it was I couldn’t help but think about how I was seeing people before they got big. I mean bigger than the music scene in Oklahoma.
The stars that illuminated me were the possible lights of Hollywood just barely out of reach. Maybe it was the vibe for tonight that made me feel that way or maybe it was contact high I was possibly getting.
Soon, the porch became crowded. Josh was smoking his cigarettes from Japan and everyone was passing around a joint. The band was about to perform soon. Before you know it the band has disappeared off the porch.
Suddenly everyone hears the drums and rushes inside. Like a scene from Scott Pilgrim Versus The World, the band starts. Performing with an electric energy. The crowd was entranced. Josh’s rocking vocals, Dante’s smooth guitar playing, Jarred’s energetic drums, and David’s dancing bass all came together to create the perfect house show.
House shows are few and far between for me these days. However, they are my favorite way to consume music. The intimate vibe, everyone is welcoming and talking to you even though you were strangers just a minute ago. It’s something that I cannot describe.
After the band performed everyone moved outside, talked, and smoked late into the night.
